The long awaited and anticipated new generation of video cards has finally been announced by Nvidia at Gamescom 2018. The new video cards have been announced with a new nomenclature – the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and the RTX 2070. These are the most powerful video cards in the Geforce branding that Nvidia has released. At Gamescom 2018 Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed that these cards were a whopping 10 years in the making. Jensen’s speech emphasized the significance that the new RTX cards have ray tracing.
The flag ship Geforce card – the RTX 2080 Ti comes equipped with an 11GB GDDR6 frame buffer running at 14Gbps, up from 11Gbps on the GTX 1080 Ti. The RTX cards are based on Nvidia’s Turing architecture which has Ray Tracing cores, AI cores, and advanced shaders. Real time Ray Tracing in Games will make games look exponentially better using the RT cores. Artificial Intelligence will enhance the gaming experience utilizing the Tensor cores for real time performance. Advanced shading will allow programmable shaders to more efficiently process games. All this combined gives us six times more performance than the previous generation.
The RTX 2000 series will be on store shelves starting September 20 priced at $699 for the RTX 2080 and $999 for the RTX 2080 Ti, in addition, the Founders Edition cards will be $100 more. The RTX 2070 will be priced at $499 and will be available in October. With the introduction of ray tracing, Geforce GPU’s are now more powerful than some professional grade cards. The implementation of Ray Tracing cores and AI cores allows the RTX 2000 series cards to be serious competitors to their high end Quadro counterparts. For workstations used in post-production and VFX fields, these cards are the best alternative to the Quadro RTX family which was announced on August 13th. Compared to the RTX 8000 at $10,000 the RTX 2080 Ti is a tenth of the price.
We still have just under a month until the RTX 2080 and the 2080 Ti hits the shelves so it is hard to tell the real world performance for these cards.
