HPE ProLiant Questions

Models, specs, ordering, support

Answers to the most common questions about HPE ProLiant rack servers from VRLA Tech. Still have questions? Talk to our engineers.

What HPE ProLiant rack server models does VRLA Tech configure?

VRLA Tech configures HPE ProLiant Gen12 rack servers including the DL380 Gen12 (2U enterprise workhorse), DL360 Gen12 (1U density), and DL380a Gen12 (4U GPU-dense for AI inference). All feature Intel Xeon 6 processors, DDR5 ECC RDIMM, PCIe Gen5, and iLO 7 management. Gen11 models are also available.

What is the difference between the DL380, DL360, and DL380a?

The DL380 Gen12 is a 2U enterprise workhorse with up to 36 NVMe drives and 3 double-wide GPUs. The DL360 Gen12 is a 1U density server with up to 20 NVMe drives and 3 single-wide GPUs. The DL380a Gen12 is a 4U GPU-dense server supporting up to 10 double-wide GPUs for AI inference with separate GPU power domains.

What is the difference between HPE Gen12 and Gen11?

Gen12 introduces Intel Xeon 6 (up to 144 cores vs 60 in Gen11), DDR5 at up to 6400 MT/s, iLO 7 with quantum-resistant security, FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification, optional direct liquid cooling, and EDSFF E3.S NVMe. Gen11 remains available for budget-conscious deployments or organizations on Intel Xeon 4th/5th gen.

Do HPE ProLiant Gen12 servers support NVIDIA GPUs?

Yes. The DL380 supports up to 8 single-wide L4 or 3 double-wide L40S, H100 NVL, or RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition. The DL380a supports up to 16 single-wide L4 or 10 double-wide L40S/H100 NVL/H200, or 8 double-wide RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition. The DL360 supports up to 3 single-wide GPUs.

Which HPE server is best for AI inference?

The HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen12 is purpose-built for AI inference with up to 10 double-wide GPUs in a 4U chassis and separate GPU power domains. For lighter inference, the DL380 Gen12 supports up to 3 double-wide GPUs in 2U. VRLA Tech configures both for vLLM, TGI, TensorRT-LLM, and Triton serving. Use our AI ROI calculator.

What security features do HPE Gen12 servers include?

HPE ProLiant Gen12 includes Silicon Root of Trust, FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification, quantum-resistant PQC algorithms (CNSA 2.0 approved), Intel SGX for application isolation, Intel TDX for VM isolation, Secure Boot, System Lockdown, and automated firmware recovery. iLO 7 features a dedicated secure enclave processor — the industry's highest server security standard.

Should I choose HPE ProLiant or Dell PowerEdge?

Both are enterprise-grade. HPE Gen12 offers iLO 7 with FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and quantum-resistant security. Dell 17th gen offers iDRAC10 and CXL 2.0 memory expansion. Choice depends on existing infrastructure, management tools, and compliance requirements. VRLA Tech configures both — see Dell rack servers or contact our engineers to discuss.

Can I get a VRLA Tech custom server instead of HPE?

Yes. VRLA Tech builds custom rack servers using the same Intel Xeon 6, NVIDIA GPUs, DDR5 ECC RDIMM, and enterprise NVMe as HPE ProLiant — without the OEM premium. If procurement doesn't require HPE, our custom servers deliver identical performance at lower cost. Explore VRLA Tech servers.

Can I get a quote on an HPE ProLiant server?

Yes. Contact VRLA Tech with your workload, software stack, and performance targets. Quotes come back within one business day. We've configured HPE servers for enterprise, government, research, and defense customers since 2016.
