Adobe Photoshop is used for photo retouching, digital compositing, print production, and AI-assisted image editing. Photoshop’s hardware requirements are more moderate than video or 3D applications but scaling up RAM and using a dedicated scratch disk provides measurable performance improvements for professionals working with large files. This guide covers the hardware specifications that affect Photoshop performance in 2026.

How Photoshop uses hardware

CPU: single-core performance for brushes and filters

Photoshop’s brush engine and most filter operations run primarily on a single CPU thread. High single-core clock speed (5.5GHz+) improves brush responsiveness on large documents and reduces filter application times. Multi-core performance benefits batch processing via Actions, Photoshop scripting, and Neural Filters that use multiple threads.

GPU: canvas acceleration and specific filters

Photoshop uses GPU acceleration for canvas rendering (smooth zoom, pan, and rotation), Blur Gallery filters (Field Blur, Iris Blur, Tilt-Shift), Camera Raw rendering, and the Oil Paint filter. GPU acceleration must be enabled in Photoshop Preferences and requires a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM. More VRAM provides headroom for larger document textures during GPU-accelerated operations.

RAM: document size and history states

Photoshop allocates RAM to hold the open document’s pixel data and history states. Adobe recommends allocating 70-80% of available RAM to Photoshop. When document size exceeds allocated RAM, Photoshop writes to the scratch disk — which is dramatically slower than RAM-resident operations. Retouchers working on high-resolution files with many layers and history states need 64GB or more to minimize scratch disk use.

Scratch disk: dedicated NVMe required

Photoshop’s scratch disk functions as overflow storage when RAM is insufficient. Scratch disk speed directly affects performance when working on documents that exceed available RAM. A dedicated NVMe SSD used exclusively as the Photoshop scratch disk — separate from the OS drive and the document storage drive — provides the best scratch disk performance.

Recommended Photoshop workstation specifications in 2026

SpecificationStandard professionalHigh-volume retouching
CPURyzen 9 9950XRyzen 9 9950X
RAM32GB DDR564GB DDR5
GPUNVIDIA RTX 5070 (12GB)NVIDIA RTX 5080 (16GB)
Scratch disk NVMe512GB dedicated PCIe 4.01TB dedicated PCIe 4.0

Scratch disk configuration. Set your Photoshop scratch disk to a dedicated NVMe drive, not the OS drive. Go to Photoshop Preferences > Scratch Disks, uncheck the OS drive, and check your dedicated scratch NVMe. This one change reduces slowdowns on large files more than any single hardware upgrade for editors already running the OS on NVMe.
