Redshift is a GPU-accelerated biased renderer developed by Maxon, widely used in Cinema 4D, Maya, Houdini, Blender, and 3ds Max pipelines. As a GPU renderer, its performance is determined almost entirely by GPU VRAM capacity and compute speed. This guide covers the hardware specifications for professional Redshift rendering workstations in 2026.
How Redshift uses hardware
GPU VRAM: the scene capacity limit
Redshift loads scene geometry, textures, displacement data, and light information into GPU VRAM before rendering. When scene data fits entirely within GPU VRAM, Redshift renders at full GPU speed. When scene data exceeds available VRAM, Redshift uses out-of-core rendering — streaming data between system RAM and GPU VRAM — which is significantly slower, often 3-10x slower than fully in-VRAM rendering.
Maximizing GPU VRAM is the most important hardware investment for Redshift users. An RTX 5090 with 32GB handles significantly larger scenes fully in VRAM than an RTX 5080 with 16GB, delivering both faster render times and higher maximum scene complexity.
GPU compute: render speed
Redshift render speed scales with GPU compute performance. The NVIDIA Blackwell architecture’s shader performance and memory bandwidth determine how many rays Redshift can trace per second. An RTX 5090 renders substantially faster than an RTX 4090 for equivalent scenes due to both increased shader throughput and higher memory bandwidth.
Multi-GPU: additive throughput
Redshift supports multiple NVIDIA GPUs rendering simultaneously. Render throughput scales approximately linearly with GPU count — two RTX 5090s render approximately twice as fast as one. In multi-GPU configurations, each GPU must individually hold the scene within its own VRAM; VRAM is not pooled across GPUs. This means multi-GPU adds speed but not scene capacity beyond a single GPU’s VRAM limit.
CPU and RAM: scene preparation and DCC application
The CPU handles DCC application operations (Cinema 4D dynamics, Houdini simulation, Maya rigging), Redshift scene preparation, and UV/texture baking operations. RAM holds the full scene data before it is sent to GPU VRAM, and holds large texture caches. 64-128GB of system RAM prevents the host DCC application from becoming a bottleneck when working with large production scenes.

VRAM vs speed tradeoff in Redshift. For scenes under 32GB, the RTX 5090 delivers faster renders than the RTX PRO 6000 due to higher raw GPU speed. For scenes over 32GB, the RTX PRO 6000’s 96GB VRAM enables fully in-VRAM rendering where the RTX 5090 would fall back to out-of-core, making the RTX PRO 6000 significantly faster for large scenes despite lower raw GPU speed.
